Meira Spivak, NCSY Portland co-director with her husband Rabbi Chanan Spivak, won the “Best of the Best” award at the chapter level during the Aug. 19-21 national conference for advisors and directors of NCSY youth groups.
Northwest Regional Advisor Rina Olivestone won the same award on the regional level.
“They gave awards in four or five categories so the Northwest won about 50 percent of the awards,” said Spivak. “The Northwest region is only three years old and got half the awards—that’s pretty good.”
About 70 to 80 teens in eighth through 12th grade participated in pNCSY programs last year. Spivak organizes weekly Latte and Learn at Multnomah Starbucks from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursdays during the school year. Periodic Shabbat dinners and social programming are also part of the program year.
