The Oregon Board of Rabbis and the Mittleman Jewish Community Center will kick off the high holiday season with the 10th annual Jewish Educational Shuk and community-wide selichot service Sept. 20.
The shuk (Hebrew for marketplace) is an evening of community learning and prayer, celebrating the wealth the Portland community has to offer in Jewish education.
This year’s shuk opens with the traditional havdalah service at 8:30 p.m. and concludes with an 11:45 p.m. selichot service led by members of the OBR.
Three sessions of classes will feature diverse offerings from many rabbis in the community. Numerous evening classes will be offered at 9-9:45, 10-10:45 and 11-11:45. Classes already planned include: Rabbi Kenneth Brodkin on 613 Obstacles to Individuality: Does observance of Torah negate our individuality?; Rabbi Daniel Isaak on The meaning of repentance: An Essay by Abraham Joshua Heschel addressed to the Jewish community of Berlin on the eve of Yom Kippur 1936; and Rabbi Ariel Stone on “A Life’s Task” by Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav.
“Last year’s was very well attended and we are looking forward to a large group for this year as well,” said MJCC CEO Lisa Horowitz. “It’s wonderful to bring together rabbis from every stream of Judaism under one roof in one evening.”
The shuk and services will be at the MJCC, 6651 SW Capitol Highway. Services are free; the cost for the education shuk is $18, or $24 after Sept. 4. Register at the MJCC, online at oregonjcc.org or by calling 503-244-0111.
