THE ROSE CITY ROLLERS usually use their roller derby skills to raise money for the Sherie Hildreth Ovarian Cancer Foundation. But this year, five of the teammates also are competing in the Red Bull Flugtag contest to raise money for SHOC.
Rose City Rollers fly for SHOC

Ovarian cancer research will reap the benefits when a member of the Rose City Rollers takes to the air.
On Aug. 2 a member of the Rose City Rollers will pilot a “flying roller skate with wings," the same day as the fourth annual Sherie Hildreth Ovarian Cancer Foundation Empowerment Run and Walk.
In the past two years, the Rose City Rollers have raised more than $6,500 for SHOC. The derby gals again will raise funds for SHOC from businesses and individuals prior to the two events. Their goal is to raise $10,000.
Members of the team plan to attend both events Aug. 2.
Donors may pledge in dollars per foot the craft flies, or a flat fee payable directly to the SHOC Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit. Donations can be made at www.shocfoundation.com or to the team representative stationed at the Flugtag event at the Funky Four’s space at Tom McCall Waterfront Park.
Five members of the Rose City Rollers roller derby league are competing in this year’s Red Bull Flugtag competition in Portland, one of three nationwide. The team, named the Funky Four Plus One More, built the flying roller skate that will be flown and piloted by one of the team members when it is pushed off a 30-foot platform over the Willamette River.
The Rose City Rollers and the SHOC Foundation have a strong connection. Roller Derby was invented in 1935 by Oregonian Leo Seltzer. Seltzer’s granddaughter, Phyllis Lang, has overcome three bouts of ovarian cancer and is involved with her friend’s foundation. Lang linked SHOC with the Rose City Rollers in 2006 and the league has supported the foundation ever since.
The SHOC Foundation raises funds for ovarian cancer research and educates women about early detection of ovarian cancer. It also empowers women recovering from ovarian cancer to find emotional, spiritual and physical balance and well-being.
Red Bull Flugtag
Aug. 2, Noon-3 p.m., at Tom McCall Waterfront Park
Red Bull Flugtag challenges teams to build homemade, human-powered flying machines and pilot them off a 30-foot high deck in hopes of achieving flight. Flugtag means “flying day” in German, but these crafts ultimately splash into the waters below. Teams are judged on their flight’s distance, creativity and showmanship.
