Lawrence Howard will present his one-man show “The Adventures of Huckleberry Horowitz” on Friday, May 7, at the Hipbone Studio at 1847 E Burnside. It’s part of the Portland Story Theater’s solo performance festival: “Singlehandedly.”
Howard’s act is about growing up Jewish in New York.
It’s about gefilte fish, chopped liver, bagels and lox. It’s about fisticuffs on the Hebrew school bus. It’s about embarrassing himself at his bar mitzvah, his secret Christmas tree, the Pope, his rabbi and finally it is about reclaiming his heritage.
Howard is one of the original co-founders of Portland Story Theater. He creates personal stories that resonate with adult audiences.
His sold-out solo show, “Shackleton’s Antarctic Nightmare,” has just been released on audio CD. He has just finished the next installment of the Armchair Adventurer series: the little-known story of Douglas Mawson and the Australian Antarctic Expedition of 1911.
Howard is originally from New York but has lived in the Pacific Northwest most of his adult life and lives in Portland today. He has a keen fascination for Antarctica, is a lover of limericks and enjoys homemade ginger ale. Learn more about him online at lawrencehoward.name.
On May 8, actor, playwright and teacher Jordan Herskowitz will present “Growing Up Jordy Pordy” his personal story about life as a professional mascot, also performed at the Hipbone Studio.
Once Herskowitz’s furry gloves come off, he reveals his own struggles of growing up Jewish in Texas, being the forgotten middle child with both of his brothers born with cystic fibrosis, and his family’s journey with organ donation.
In “Growing Up Jordy Pordy” Herskowitz plays more than 30 characters. His intimate and touching performance will mesmerize people of all ages and backgrounds from beginning to end. Critically praised as “a performance masterpiece,” a trailer of his show can be seen at jordypordy.com
