Poetry workshop March 15

A poetry workshop is entitled “Writing Poetry of the Jewish Experience” will be led by Portland poet and Oregon Book Award winner Willa Schneberg at the Oregon Jewish Museum on Sunday, March 15 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Poems by Yehudi Amichai, Gerald Stern, Adrienne Rich, Philip Schultz, Marge Piercy and others will be considered.

Writing exercises will be offered to motivate the creation of poems. Poems written in the workshop will be respectfully critiqued. Time permitting; participants will critique a previously written poem by each participant who chooses to share one.

The workshop is limited to 12 participants. A contribution of $75 is suggested, with some flexibility possible. All proceeds go to the OJM. For more information, call the museum at 503-226-3600.

Jerome Robbins on OPB

American Masters profiles choreographer Jerome Robbins, born Jerome Rabinowitz, Feb. 18 at 9 p.m. on KOPB, Channel 10.

Directed and produced by Judy Kinberg and written by Robbins biographer Amanda Vaill, the two-hour “Jerome Robbins: Something to Dance About” is narrated by Ron Rifkin  who performed the roles of both Robbins and his father in a workshop production of the director/choreographer’s theatrical autobiography.

Robbins transformed the Broadway musical with works such as “West Side Story,” “Gypsy” and “Peter Pan,” and is one of America’s greatest ballet choreographers.

The film features excerpts from his journals, performance footage, and never-before-seen rehearsal recordings, as well as interviews with Robbins and others including Mikhail Baryshnikov; Jacques d’Amboise; Suzanne Farrell; Arthur Laurents; Peter Martins; Frank Rich; Chita Rivera; Stephen Sondheim; and Robbins’ “Fiddler” collaborators Jerry Bock, Sheldon Harnick and Joseph Stein.

Open Studies seeks artists

Portland Open Studios has issued a call to Metro Portland artists in all media who are willing to open their studios to the public on Oct. 10-11 or 17-18.

Portland Open Studios is an opportunity for artists to show their art, sell their work and build an audience. Artists selected for the event will have an image of their artwork published in the Tour Guide and on the Web.

POS offers a scholarship opportunity for artists between 20 and 30 years old. The Kimberly Gales Emerging Artists Scholarship recipient will have all POS fees waived and will receive a $100 stipend.

Information, directions and an application are available at www.portlandopenstudios.com. Deadline for artist’s application and scholarship are both March 15.
