Jewish American band Safam will perform at a concert at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 7 at Congregation Neveh Shalom, 2900 SW Peaceful Lane, Portland.
The Boston-based group has entertained and inspired audiences of all ages and denominations with original music since 1974. Their music covers a wide range of musical styles—rock & roll, pop, folk, Latin and Hassidic—while maintaining a decidedly Jewish flavor. Safam’s music can be heard at www.safam.com.
In 1979, Cantor Robbie Solomon, one of the group’s two songwriters, wrote “Leaving Mother Russia,” which became a rallying cry of the Soviet Jewry movement.
Cantor Linda Shivers said the Jewish rock band was extremely well received on its two previous appearances at Neveh Shalom. The band last performed in Portland in 1993, she said.
Proceeds from the concert, which commemorates Neveh Shalom’s 140th anniversary, will benefit the synagogue’s youth education programs and adult choir. Tickets purchased by Jan. 30 are $20 for adults; $12 for students and seniors; $10 for groups of 10 or more; and $48 for families (two adults and children). Tickets at the door are $25 for adults and $18 for students and seniors.
Tickets can be purchased online at www.nevehshalom.org. For more information, call Neveh Shalom at 503-246-8831.
