Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Michael Chabon will speak at Congregation Beth Israel in Portland on Sunday, Nov. 23, at 5 p.m. in the main sanctuary.
He will answer questions from the audience in a brief session following the lecture.
The lecture is free and open to the community.
Chabon will speak on “Imaginary Homelands: Themes of Jewish Identity in Popular Fiction,” themes he addresses in his popular fiction.
Following the lecture, Mr. Chabon will attend a reception and book-signing at 6:30 pm in Goodman Hall, located in the Schnitzer Family Center across from the Main Sanctuary. Attendees may bring their copies for signing or may purchase books on site from local bookseller 23rd Avenue Books.
The lecture is one of a series of events in Beth Israel’s year-long 150th anniversary celebration of history, culture, worship and social action. The event is underwritten by the Oseran Family Endowment and by the Dr. Millard S. and Carolyn G. Rosenblatt Fund.
“This is both a celebration and an opportunity,” said Senior Rabbi Michael Cahana. “We hope to bring our entire community together for an exciting and inspiring series of events as we re-dedicate ourselves to the values that steer our lives.”
Congregation Beth Israel is located at 1972 NW Flanders Street, Portland, 97209. An updated calendar of anniversary events is available at www.bethisrael-pdx.org.
