Sitting with Scorners: Early Jewish and Christian Responses to Sport and Spectacle: a research talk by Loren Spielman. Loren Spielman is a visiting instructor at Wesleyan University where he is teaching courses on Hebrew Bible, rabbinic literature and Jewish leisure in antiquity. His dissertation is a broad historical overview of Jewish attitudes towards athletic competitions, theatrical performances, gladiatorial bouts, beast hunts, staged executions and horse races from 40 BCE to the 7th century CE. Holocaust survivor speaks to Shaarie Torah middle school and adults. Alter Wiener is one of the very few Holocaust survivors still living in the Portland area. His story is a testimony to an unfolding tragedy taking place in WWII. It has a message what prejudice may lead to and how tolerance is imperative.
