Sitting with Scorners: Early Jewish and Christian Responses to Sport and Spectacle: a research talk by Loren Spielman. Loren Spielman is a visiting instructor at Wesleyan University where he is teaching courses on Hebrew Bible, rabbinic literature and Jewish leisure in antiquity. His dissertation is a broad historical overview of Jewish attitudes towards athletic competitions, theatrical performances, gladiatorial bouts, beast hunts, staged executions and horse races from 40 BCE to the 7th century CE.
