Beginning Jan. 15, the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland will send out an email newsletter twice a month to help fill the gap created by the closure of the Jewish Review with the Jan. 1 edition.

About 30 people representing community organizations turned out for two community meetings to learn how to submit news and calendar announcements to the new e-newsletter. At those meetings, the federation also invited Oregon Jewish Life magazine Editor Deborah Moon to share information about the new independent, monthly magazine that begins publishing with a February 2012 issue. The federation newsletter, which has yet to be named, will be emailed on the 15th and 30th of each month.

Deadlines for submissions will be the 10th and 25th with the cutoff time being close of business (5 p.m.), unless the dates fall on a weekend in which case submissions will be due on the Friday prior.

The first email will be sent out on Jan. 15, 2012 (submission deadline will be the close of business Tuesday, Jan. 10).  

An online form for submitting items is available on the federation website www.jewishportland.org. Publication of submissions in the newsletter is not guaranteed, and the federation retains the right to edit all submissions for grammar, content and length, as well as select the displayed sequence for published articles. 

Submissions for articles will be limited to 300 words or less. In the newsletter itself, snippets of the submissions will be shown; if provided, links to full articles/announcements will be included in the newsletter so readers can access additional content.

Pictures (in jpeg format, limited to 300 pixels wide) may also be included with submissions. Organizations submitting a photo should provide a caption and the photographer’s name.

All community events need to be submitted to the online calendar on the federation website. The newsletter will have an embedded link to the online calendar.

The email newsletter will include (subject to change):
• Local News (opinion pieces, local interest, event wrap-ups, upcoming speakers)
• National News Feed (stories provided by national sources plus links to national sites)
• Focus on Federation (highlighting various activities or achievements by agencies or outreach by the Federation)
• Events (short selection, four or five total, of important community-wide events as selected by the Federation)
• Link to Lifecycle Announcements (births, weddings, deaths)
• Embedded Calendar (linking to online community calendar)
