The Mittleman Jewish Community Center will celebrate the classic Broadway musical “Fiddler on the Roof” Nov. 15 with an evening of music, fun and frivolity suitable for all ages beginning at 5:30 p.m.
The MJCC Ballroom will be set up with vignettes of important scenes from the film version of the play, recreating the shtetl of Anatevka, the story’s setting. There will be Golda’s kitchen, Motel’s tailor shop, a wedding, Tevye’s milk cart and more.
There will be live music by a local klezmer band and some arts and crafts projects for children.
The end of Shabbat will be observed with a Havdallah celebration led by Cantor Ida Rae Cahana and Kim Palumbis, both local Jewish musicians.
The rest of the evening will be hosted by community favorites, the father/daughter team of Bob Ginsberg and Jennifer Felberg presenting a unique interpretation ofTevye and Golda.
A buffet dinner will be available. Exceprts of the film’s classic musical numbers will be screened in the ballroom.
“Everyone will come for the songs they love and the tunes they’ve known,” said event organizer and MJCC volunteer Abby Myers.
Attendees are encouraged to come in costume and participate in the scheduled costume contest. Prizes will be awarded.
“We’d like for this event to be something of which the Jewish community and the community at large are excited to be a part and talk about each year.,” said Myers.
The MJCC “Fiddler on the Roof Sing Along” is an intergenerational/interfaith event. People of all faiths are welcome.
The event is free, though reservations are required. The optional dinner is $12 for adults and $6 for children under 12 and adults over 65. RSVP to the MJCC. A reservation is necessary with or without the offered dinner. Call 503-244-0111.
The Mittleman Jewish Community Center is located at 6651 SW Capitol Highway in Portland.
