OBITUARIES
HAROLD SCHOEN
Harold Schoen died at the age of 82 on Nov. 15, at his home, surrounded by family. A graveside service officiated by Rabbi Laurie Rutenburg was held Nov. 18 at River View Cemetery. Harold was born on Nov. 5, 1929, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Jack Schoen and Frieda Gurstein. He graduated from Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1948, and served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean War. After the war he married Leona Rosenberg in Brooklyn, N.Y., on April 11, 1954. From 1954 to his retirement in 1992 Mr. Schoen worked as a salesman in the garment industry selling lady’s undergarments. Harold was a member of the Knights of Pythias in Brooklyn, New York. Mr. Schoen is survived by his wife of 57 years, Leona Schoen of Portland, sons Mal Schoen of Menlo Park, Calif., and Gary Schoen of Portland, and daughter Amy Schoen of Rohnert Park, Calif., and one sister, Pearl Lubart of Fla.
ANN FARBER BALDWIN
Ann Farber Baldwin of Chinook, Wash., died at home on Nov. 22 at the age of 63. Ann Helen Farber was born in New York City to Arthur and Ruth (Jaffe) Farber. She moved to Seattle, Wash., at age 8 and graduated from Sammamish High School in Bellevue, Wash., in 1965. She attended Reed College in Portland, and the London School of Economics in England—earning a degree in philosophy from Reed College in 1970. Joining the community known as Mist Mountain Farm near Clatskanie, she taught in the Mayger School Head Start program, later becoming Head Start administrator for the northern Willamette Valley. In 1980, she began her career as a Licensed Massage Therapist as co-owner of the Evergreen Massage Clinic in SW Portland. In 1985, she married her true love, Ron Baldwin of Clatskanie. Their son, Alex, was born the following year. In 1987, they moved to Astoria, where Ann established a private massage practice. Relocating to Chinook, Wash., in 1993, the couple operated Lido Caffé Espresso in Astoria and Aunt Clara’s Greenhouse, a retail nursery in Chinook. Baldwin taught “Massage for Relaxation” for 20 years at Clatsop Community College in Astoria. Her interests included literature, philosophy, music and the outdoors. She was an accomplished banjo/guitar player, and the old piano danced under her fingers at many Netel Grange country dances. Mrs. Baldwin is survived by her husband, Ron Baldwin of Chinook; son Alexander Baldwin of Seattle, Wash.; brother Daniel Farber of Mt. Vernon, Wash.; and sister Laurie Pruden of Edgewood, Wash.
HYMAN BALK
A service was held Oct. 26 at Neveh Zedek-Rose City Lodge Cemetery for Hyman Balk, who died Oct. 22 at the age of 90. During his WWII military service, he was wounded in Italy and received the Purple Heart. He married Irene Goldbaum and moved to Portland in 1948. He owned a shoe store and worked for Nordstrom for more than 30 years. His wife of almost 50 years, Irene, died in 1995. Hyman is survived by his sons, Leonard and Arthur Balk; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Contributions can be made to Congregation Neveh Shalom or Robison Jewish Health Center.
