The Citizens’ Disability Advisory Committee of the City of Portland, Office of Neighborhood Involvement, honored the Mittleman Jewish Community Center last month for maintaining a warm-water therapy pool available for those suffering a range of disabilities.
The award plaque states “We recognize your dedication and advocacy in making a difference in the disability community through inclusiveness.”
MJCC Chief Executive Officer Lisa Horowitz said, “It was very moving to hear the description of the many people for whom the warm-water therapy pool has made a real difference in their lives. We have much to be proud of here at the MJCC.”
The therapy pool is a warm-water pool with lift available for therapy and exercise for people suffering ailments including arthritis, spinal cord injury, fibromyalgia and many other conditions.
“It’s so gratifying that the pool’s usefulness to the community has been recognized and we are delighted to be able to offer this service to the community. We are lucky to have such a dedicated group of warm-water therapy pool users and supporters,” added Horowitz.
Horowitz said several dozen people use the pool every day for a variety of uses—stretching, exercise and therapy. She said the center also offers swim lessons for small children in the therapy pool since the warm water is “quite enticing.
