In honor of becoming an International Baccalaureate Candidate School, Portland Jewish Academy has created an auction with an international flair to raise money for scholarships.
The 47th Annual PJA Auction – Passport to the World will be held at the Mittleman Jewish Community Center on Dec. 7. The silent auction begins at 4:30 p.m. with appetizers and drinks; buffet dinner follows and then the live auction.
The silent auction will be filled with goodies from donors, complete with gift baskets with an international flair, a chance to sign up for a cooking party that focuses on Northwest ingredients, various local trips, event tickets, jewelry, art, wines from around the world and discounted goods and services. The live auction will give bidders the chance to take various international trips with apartments in France, Israel and Mexico. Plus, fun events up for bid will include a beer tasting dinner with different beers served with each course. And Drs. Richard and Judah Garfinkle will again donate a full orthodontia treatment for an adult or child.
Auction Coordinator Roseanne Levi said the buffet dinner will feature cuisine from around the world. She said solicitors have worked hard to find international trips, gift baskets and donations from many countries to follow the Passport to the World theme.
Unlike the high school IB program, which is very rigorous and targeted for youth ready to do college work, PJA Head of School Patricia Schwartz said the primary and middle school IB programs are based on best development practices and are suitable for all children.
“Auction proceeds support general operations including scholarships which are especially important during these economic times,” said PJA CEO Lisa Horowitz.
“I’ve been doing this (working on the auction) since fifth grade,” said Auction Assistant Linda Singer, whose own sons long ago graduated from PJA. “The auction is always so much fun.”
Tickets at $75 dollars per person with sponsorship options available. For more information, call 503-244-0126.
