As part of its observance of its golden anniversary, the Jewish Review is sponsoring a regional essay contest.
First appearing in January 1959, the Review is one of several Portland special-interest papers that cater to culturally unique segments of the community. While large daily newspapers are struggling in today’s changed media environment, small community newspapers remain vibrant.
The Review’s essay contest asks: Why do community newspapers such as the Jewish Review remain important for their readers and for the communities they serve?
Participants will compete in three age-groups: sixth-eighth grade, high school and adult (includes college students).
Manuscripts must not exceed 700 words. Submissions should be sent by e-mail to contest@jewishreview.org. Deadline for submissions is June 30.
Mark entry with the author’s name, contest age group and contact information. Winners will be notified by Sept. 30.
The first-place essay in each group will published in the newsprint and online versions of the Jewish Review. Second, third and honorable mention essays will be published in the online Jewish Review (www.jewishreview.org).
Prize packages from Portland-area businesses are being solicited and will be announced in upcoming editions of the Jewish Review.
