Due to the high incidence of breast cancer among Jewish women, many synagogues have fielded teams through the years. Congregation Beth Israel has had a Race for the Cure team for six years. This year, 56 men, women and children registered for the race with the CBI team chaired by Terri Warren. Individuals of Ashkenazi (eastern European Jewish) descent have a one in 40 chance of having a BRCA1 or BRCA2 genetic mutation, compared to a one in 800 chance in the general population. Women with a mutation on either gene have a 36 to 85 percent lifetime risk for breast cancer. The 17th annual Komen Portland Race for the Cure drew about 45,000 participants.
