Jewish youth in fifth to 12th grade are invited to an information and kosher pizza party Feb. 18 to learn about the opportunities to play sports and socialize with their peers in the Portland Maccabi Club.
The second year of the Portland Maccabi Club offers Oregon and Southwest Washington youth the opportunity to compete in sports and socialize with their peers in a program modeled after the Maccabi Games.
Beginning with a barbecue in late March and including sport practices and social and social action activities, the program will culminate in a tournament in August.
The Feb. 18 party will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Mittleman Jewish Community Center. Potential participants can meet some coaches and past participants and hear more about the program.
Founder Jodi Berris emphasized even youth who will be at summer camp or on family vacations for part of the summer are welcome to sign up and participate in portions of the program.
The program will run from March to August with two clinics/practices per month and a social every four-six weeks.
Socials will include a kickoff barbeque in late March. In May, participants will volunteer at Rose Schnitzer Manor for a Sports night with seniors. An ice skating party is planned for June. In July, an athlete/family picnic will feature an ultimate Frisbee game.
Planned sports include tennis, table tennis, golf, track, soccer, bowling, basketball, swimming, chess, dance, racquetball, floor hockey and gymnastics. Sports with low interest may be dropped; therefore athletes should pick their top three choices.
Portland Maccabi Club is a program of Portland Jewish Events with support from Jewish Federation of Greater Portland, the Jewish Review, and the MJCC.
Cost of $36 includes all practices/clinics, socials, t shirt and competition.
