Portlander Lawrence Norman and his USA master’s basketball teammates Eric Kriftcher, Michael Fishman and Saul Salama, brought home a gold medal in Masters (35+) Basketball with five wins in five games.
In 1991, Norman played in the Open Division in the Pan Am Maccabi Games in Uruguay. He was one of five Portlanders who went to this year’s Pan Am Maccabi Games in Argentina.
Andy Howard was profiled in the Jan. 15 Jewish Review. Other Portlanders in the Pan Am games were Avie Zarem, who was co-captain of the gold medal Masters Soccer team, and his wife Adrienne Sciberras, a chiropractor who served on the medical staff for the games.
Glen Coblens, the Open Women’s Basketball co-chair, was also a member of the master’s basketball team and won a silver medal in the half marathon for those ages 40-44. Coblens said he hopes to recruit a larger Oregon contingent to compete in the World Maccabiah in Israel next summer. For information on participating in next year’s games, contact Coblens at 503-705-6295 or glencoblens@yahoo.com.
