Baskin keynotes March 1 Shabbaton

Judith R. Baskin, Ph.D., will be welcomed back to Portland as the featured speaker at Women of Reform Judaism/Beth Israel Sisterhood’s Shabbaton, Saturday, March 1.

The theme of the Shabbaton is “The Wise Hearted Women,” and the schedule includes Torah study, morning Shabbat Services, lunch and a day of learning with Judaic scholar Baskin and others. Participants will explore the new WRJ publication, “The Torah: A Women’s Commentary,” of which Baskin served on the editorial board, as will women’s roles in creating and sustaining the Jewish world. All are welcome. Registration of $18 includes lunch.

Baskin serves as the Knight Professor of Humanities, head of the department of religious studies and director of the Harold Schnitzer Family Program in Judaic Studies at the University of Oregon.

Baskin will be joined by a panel of community members, including Rabbi Ariel Stone, founding rabbi of Congregation Shir Tikvah, and Rabbi Annette Koch, who leads both the congregation and religious school at Beit Haverim/South Metro Jewish Congregation in West Linn. They, along with CBI teachers Elana Cohn-Rozansky and Rachel Halupowski, will lead a variety of workshops throughout the day, including creating a one-of-a-kind tallit and exploring the female side of God.
