Oregon Kosher, in collaboration with numerous local Jewish organizations in the Portland area, is launching Kosher Awareness Month in April to promote the ideals of kosher food.

Throughout the month, Oregon Kosher will present educational and interactive programs. The core of the program will be a series of classes on kosher food production given by experts in the field of kosher supervision. The series will be held at the Mittleman Jewish Community Center in the two weeks leading up to Passover, a time when many Jews show some concern about kashrut.

On April 6 from 9:30-11:30 a.m., classes will look at “What is kosher food?” and “Mixing and blending.” April 9 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., absorption, kashering and immersing will be the topic. From 9:30 to 11:30, April 13, industry updates and “Why is this night different” Passover specialties will be the topics. A koshering session and question and answer period is set for 7:30-8:30 p.m. April 16.

A walk through Albertson’s is also being organized in the days before Pesach.

“The goal is to increase awareness of kosher observance in Portland and the surrounding communities,” said Rabbi Zalman Krems, kashrus administrator for Oregon Kosher.
