The Mittleman Jewish Community Center and Portland Kollel will present a Purim carnival at the MJCC 1-4 p.m., March 23.
It includes a bungee run, Dance-Dance Revolution with prizes, guitar hero competition, bouncy boxing, jumping castles, clown show, hypnotist show, children’s crafts, rock climbing and cotton candy. Kosher food from Café at the J will be on sale.
“Purim in Jerusalem, and other walled cities, is celebrated the day after we always celebrate it (based on Esther 9; 19),” said Rabbi Tzvi Fischer of Portland Kollel. “This year, however, this causes a problem as Purim is on Friday, which makes Jerusalem Purim on Shabbat. The custom in Jerusalem is to do a ‘Purim Meshulash’ or ‘triple Purim. The Megillah is read on Friday, celebrations continue on Shabbat and culminate in a festive Purim party on Sunday. Joining Jerusalem, the MJCC and Portland Kollel decided to hold their Purim carnival on Sunday.”
This year’s festival is also co-sponsored by the Jewish Student Union and Aspen Capital.
Cost is $4 for children ages 3 to 12, $6 for teens 13-17 and $8 for adults with a family maximum of $24 per family. For more information, call the MJCC at 503-244-0111 or the Kollel at 245-5420.
