On Sunday April 27 at 3 p.m., storyteller Sarah Stein will debut her one-hour show called “Circus on the Streets” (Jewish Family Stories from the Lower East Side) in the chapel at the Mittleman Jewish Community Center.
These are stories that Sarah wrote about her family’s life during the 1930s and early 1940s.
The show is filled with local color and lots of nostalgia touching on such things as life in the tenements and on the streets, Coney Island and radio programs. The family characters are equally colorful, especially Sarah’s father, the “tailor from coast to coast.”
The show will also include songs by Rabbi Aryeh Hirschfield of P’nai Or of Portland.
“Circus on the Streets” is a mixture of laughter and poignancy recommended for adults and children ages 10 and older.
Sarah Stein has been a professional storyteller for more than 20 years and is one of the founders of the Portland Storytellers’ Guild. Born in New York City, she has called Portland her home for 30 years.
Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for children to 13 years (cash or check at door). Reservations are recommended. Call Stein at 503-230-7079 or e-mail her at ssteinstory@yahoo.com.
