Burnstein takes reins of home care agency

By Deborah Moon

Paul Burnstein became the new executive director of Sinai Family Home Services in March, joining the Jewish agency’s new home care manager Regina Silbert, who arrived in January.

Created last summer and owned equally by Cedar Sinai Park and Jewish Family and Child Services, SFHS provides home care services based on Jewish values. As a home care agency, SFHS provides personal care, medication assistance, transportation, housekeeping, guidance and family support in addition to coordinating other necessary services.

Services are available for as little as four hours per shift and up to 24 hours a day. Private pay and long-term care insurance are accepted.

Burnstein, who moved from Boulder to Portland last August, has a master’s degree in gerontology and long-term care administration from Naropa University in Boulder. While completing his master’s and after graduation he was a project director in a senior residence.

While in Boulder he also worked for Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi at the Spiritual Eldering Institute until it closed in 2005.

Burnstein said he is looking forward to working at SFHS, which fills in the continuum of care between the JFCS’s Lifeline program of home services and the residential care available at CSP.

“Filling in the center allows elders to age in place,” he said. “This is an opportunity to make a difference.”

Silbert has a master’s in health administration/gerontology from Portland State University. After graduation she ran the Loaves and Fishes/Meals on Wheels program at the Multnomah Center in 1991-92.

She lived in San Francisco for several years, where she held a variety of jobs in senior services. She worked for the American Society on Aging, ran case management in Oakland for seniors on MediCal and was director of residence programs and services at a large assisted living and memory care facility. She returned to Portland last fall.

“I love my work,” said Silbert of working with seniors.
