Local kosher milk now available

Locally produced, kosher-supervised milk is now available in Oregon.

Until recently, a few hundred people in the Pacific Northwest have been getting milk shipped in from the Midwest, according to Rabbi Zalman Krems, kashrus administrator of Oregon Kosher. Now Oregon Kosher has teamed up with the Seattle Va’ad to initiate local production of kosher-supervised milk, known as Cholov Yisroel Milk.

Kosher supervision is necessary due to the impracticality of distinguishing kosher milk (i.e., milk from a kosher animal) from non-kosher milk. The only way to be certain of the origins of the milk is with full-time supervision, according to Krems.

NW Kosher Milk is supervised from the beginning of production until the last bottle rolls off the conveyor. The milk is from Mallorie’s Dairy, where they milk their own cows and bottle their own milk. Having total control of their animals from the time of birth, they are able to closely monitor and care for their health.

“We only use milk that is the cleanest, freshest and purest milk that can be produced for us locally in the Pacific Northwest,” said Krems. “We see ourselves as serving all the kinds of discerning consumers, especially those who see the advantage of a completely supervised product.”

NW Kosher Milk is available at the Shattuck Road Albertson’s store. For more information, visit www.oregonkosher.org or call 503-343-3497.
