Sarah and Will Shields announce the birth of their sister Bailey Eileen on May 17. Bailey is the daughter of Emily and Bill Shields. Grandparents are Chris and Greg Hodes and Irma Shields; great-grandparents are Shirley and Stan Hodes.
Reina Abolofia, daughter of Mark and Francine Abolofia, won the President’s Award for Outstanding Community Engagement at Portland State University. Abolofia was presented this award at a luncheon on June 4 in recognition of her volunteer hours spent working with middle and high school students in Portland area band programs and for the many free community-wide recitals she has performed.
The Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity at the University of Oregon held a reunion June 1 in Portland. More than sixty alums attended from as far as Tulsa, Okla., and Los Angeles, Calif. When the Chapter disbanded in the 60s, proceeds from the sale of the house were designated for Hillel on the U of O campus. Highlights of the reunion included personal stories from each attendee and the participation of Len “Ike” Donin, now 94 and the oldest living letterman, who was honored by the university at a basketball game last season.
A graveside service was held for Martin May June 4 at Willamette National Cemetery. Mr. May died May 24 at the age of 88. Originally from Camberg, Germany, Mr. May had lived in Portland since 2005. In 1953 he married Renate Ann Teichman and worked primarily as an executive in the advertising industry. Mr. May is survived by his wife Renate; daughter Caryn May; son Eugene May; brother Dr. Robert May; and three grandchildren. Memorial contributions can be made in his honor to Cedar Sinai Park of Portland.
A funeral service was held for Sheila Paslin June 4 at the Neveh Zedek-Rose City Lodge Cemetery. Mrs. Paslin died June 1 at the age of 32. Mrs. Paslin had lived in Portland since 1997. She was the owner/operator of Buried Bones Bakery, and she served on the Board of Directors for Greyhound Pets of America NW and the Board for Hazeldale off-leash dog park in Aloha. Mrs. Paslin is survived by her husband Daniel; father David Wren; mother Teresa Turner; and sister Pamela Meyers. Memorial contributions can be made in her honor to Greyhound Pets of America NW.
A graveside service was held for Marvin Neal Yost May 5 at Willamette National Cemetery. Mr. Yost died May 1 at the age of 65. Born in Twin Falls, Idaho, Mr. Yost had lived in Eugene for five years and Portland for two and half years. He was a member of the Air Force for 26 years and died with Military Honors. Mr. Yost is survived by his wife Janice; son Michael Yost; daughters Melinda Braese and Marsha Davis; sister Valerie Bixler; brother Randy Yost; stepdaughter Donna Erbs; five grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held for Charlene Weinstein May 26 at Congregation Shaarie Torah. Mrs. Weinstein died May 24 at the age of 83.Raised in Portland, Mrs. Weinstein was a graduate of Grant High School. In 1946 she married Allan Weinstein; the couple lived the majority of their married life in Vancouver, Wash. She was a long-time member of Temple Beth Israel and Congregation Shaarie Torah. Her husband preceded her in death in 2004. Mrs. Weinstein is survived by her son Jeff; daughter Lindi; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions can be made in her honor to Robison Jewish Health Center or the Milt and Cissi Carl Preschool.
