PASTRAMI IS KING—Nick Zukin watches his partner Ken Gordon slice artisan pastrami at the pair’s new restaurant, Kenny & Zuke’s Delicatessen, at 1038 SW Stark St., during a staff-training/test kitchen day. The two Jews who share a love for the taste of classic New York Jewish delicacies began selling their artisan pastrami at farmer’s markets and then on Saturday mornings at Ken’s Place Restaurant (featured in the Jewish Review Sept. 1, 2006) while they searched for a suitable location for a full-service delicatessen. The pastrami is cured for five days, smoked 10 hours, steamed for three hours and hand-sliced to order. The new deli opens Oct. 23 in downtown Portland. On Oct. 29, the restaurant will host a fund-raiser for Jewish Family and Child Service.

Just a week after opening, Kenny & Zuke’s Delicatessen will host “A Taste of NY in PDX,” a grand opening celebration for the traditional New York style delicatessen to benefit the Jewish Family and Child Service’s TASK Program for disabilities awareness.

“A traditional New York style delicatessen, Kenny and Zuke’s will be a wonderful addition to the downtown area and our community,” said JFCS President Michael Wendrow. “We are honored that they have invited us to share in their celebration:  A Taste of New York in Portland on Monday, Oct. 29 from 5 to 9 p.m.”

The new deli is located in the newly renovated Ace Hotel at 1038 SW Stark St.

The menu for the benefit evening will include a sampling of Kenny & Zuke’s Menu: Pastrami reuben sliders; kosher bagel dogs; chopped liver canapés; lacy potato pancakes with smoked salmon, sour cream and chives; pastries; cookies; and chocolate egg creams at the bar.

Classical guitarist Peter Zisa will perform.

The evening’s proceeds will benefit JFCS’s TASK program, which supports individuals, families and children with disabilities through educational, outreach and activities programs throughout the state.

“We invite you to join us in this evening of fun, entertainment and support for our families with disabilities,” said Wendrow.

Tickets are $50 per person, which includes dinner, a no-host bar, music and a short educational program about the JFCS TASK Program and who it serves.  Tickets can be purchased either online at www.jfcs-portland.org or by calling JFCS at 503-226-7079 ext. 10.
