Author Vanessa Van Petten tells about 25 parents on Oct. 8 how to communicate effectively with their teens. She defined common teen lingo, such as ROTFL (roll on the floor laughing) and offered tips on understanding what teens think when they make “dumb decisions.”

The next night, about 45 teen-agers showed up to hear her discuss how to get their parents to understand them. The talks were the first in a series from the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland’s Women’s Philanthropy Committee and the Mittleman Jewish Community Center, site of most of the events.
