Season for giving returns; reason for giving unchanged

By Jewish Federation of Greater Portland

article created on:

A careful reading of this issue of the Jewish Review will make it clear that we are together engaged in one of the largest, most effective and most remarkable humanitarian ventures in human history: providing vitally needed social services to an entire nation (in the broadest, non-state meaning of the term) around the globe and around the clock.

Our federation joins hundreds of other federations in North America as well as similar community organizations in Europe, South America, Australia and Asia, in an unprecedented and unmatched outpouring of communal responsibility and generosity that is the envy of every other ethnic group.

We do this not to meet goals or quotas, not for self-aggrandizement nor for any other ulterior motive, other than to care for members of our family who may need our assistance.

We do not yet do a complete job, and we must constantly strive to refine and maximize our efforts, but what we have accomplished in Portland, in the upbuilding of the society of Israel, in meeting needs of young and old in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, and in providing inspiration and meaning for our people everywhere, should make us all very proud. Join us as we move the venture ahead. There can be no more rewarding way to invest time and resources.
