WOLF/HONIGSTOCK
Susan and David Honigstock of Beaverton announce the engagement of their son Gerald Honigstock to Pamela Wolfe, both of Maple Grove, Minn. Ms. Wolfe is the daughter of Lynn and Henry Wolfe of Winnipeg, Canada.
The couple met at a Jewish singles group and are planning a March wedding in Minneapolis.
GARTEN
Mel and Ruth Garten celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary at private dinner with family and friends in Portland Oct. 27.
The Gartens were married November 1942 in New York City. At the time Mr. Garten was a parachute infantryman in the army and his 30-year military career included service in WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the United Nations in Africa and constabulary duty during the occupation of Germany.
Mr. Garten was post commander of Fort Bragg, N.C., when he retired.
The couple then moved to Florida where Mr. Garten worked as a tenured professor of political science at the University of Tampa. Mrs. Garten was also involved with the University as a guide for the parents of new students while she took care of her ailing mother. A dedicated army wife, Mrs. Garten managed the couples home and responsibilities through every assignment and new post, including more than 28 cities.
In 2001 the Gartens moved to Oregon to be closer to their sons and extended family.
LEONARD SUBOTNICK
A funeral service was held for Leonard Subotnick Sept. 26 in Los Angeles. Mr. Subotnick died Sept. 21 at the age of 89.
Born in Portland, Mr. Subotnick was an Oregon State University graduate. In 1942, he married Sybelle Brounstein, his wife of 65 years, and moved to Los Angeles to establish the Los Angeles Carton Company.
Mr. Subotnick also volunteered for Little League and Junior League as a coach, director and president at Rancho Park for 27 years.
He is survived by wife Sybelle, daughters Lynda Campf Weinstein and Andrea Magdich, sons Joel and Jory Subotnick, sister Irene Harrowitz and three grandchildren.
CELIA BROUNSTEIN
A funeral service was held for Celia M. Brounstein at the Weinstein Chapel Oct. 21. Mrs. Brounstein died Oct. 18 at the age of 93.
Born in Portland, Mrs. Brounstein was raised in Spokane, Wash. She returned to Portland in the mid 1930s and worked as an administrative assistant for the Spokesman Review, the Oregonian, United Way and her primary employer Labor’s Community Services.
Mrs. Brounstein was a member of Neveh Shalom, Alpha Iota, B’nai B’rith, Hadassah and the Maccabees.
She is predeceased by husband Bernard Brounstein and survived by sons Gary Brounstein and Dale Brounstein, daughter Carol Buckle, sister Leah Hardin, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Memorial contributions can be made in her honor to Congregation Neveh Shalom.
EILEEN ZUGMAN
A funeral service was held for Eileen B. Zugman at the Gevurtz Chapel Oct. 25. Mrs. Zugman died Oct. 24 at the age of 95.
Mrs. Zugman had lived in Portland her entire life. She worked primarily in the clerical field: 20 years at the Jewish federation and 20 years at the Pittock Mansion. Mrs. Zugman was also a member of Neveh Shalom, the Tualatin Country Club, Hadassah, Robison Jewish Home Sisterhood and the Neveh Shalom Sisterhood.
She was predeceased by husband Harry Zugman and son Kenne Alan Zugman. Mrs. Zugman is survived by son Richard Lauren Zugman, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions can be made in her honor to Talking Books for the Blind, care of Neveh Shalom.
