Volunteer to make connections on Dec. 2 at Super Sunday
Super Sunday “Make the Connection” is Dec. 2 at Hoffmann Hall on the Portland State University campus. This community-building event chaired by Alan Bacharach and Steve Bloom supports the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland’s Annual Campaign.
Volunteers are needed as phone solicitors and administrative support. To help volunteers “make connections” and facilitate interconnection between different segments of the community, each shift will feature designated groups (see schedule below).
“One of the greatest attributes of Super Sunday is the fact that so many committed volunteers come together in support of our community. This year we are emphasizing the opportunity for people to make connections with one another,” said Josh Stein, federation marketing director.
Though all volunteers are welcome at all shifts, each shift has a focus. Child care is available for the middle two shifts:
• 9:30-11:30 a.m. Men’s Clubs/Seniors
• 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Women’s Groups/Day School Parents
• 1:30-3:30 p.m. Synagogue/Agency Boards
• 3:30-5:30 p.m. Young Adult/Youth Groups
To volunteer call Josh Stein at 503-245-5641 or visit www.jewishportland.org/supersunday.
Fund created for Recht funerals
A fund has been created to help pay the expenses for the burial of Laurie and Rebecca Recht, the mother and daughter who died Oct. 11 in their Vancouver home.
“Helping take care of these needs is known as Chessed Shel Emet, genuine kindness, since all other kindnesses may possibly be done for sake of pay back, friendship or other ulterior motive,” said Rabbi Shmulik Greenberg of the Chabad Jewish Center of Clark County, who officiated at the ceremony at the River View Cemetery.
Expenses were about $11,000. The Jewish Federation of Greater Portland, Congregation Neveh Shalom and Congregation Beth Israel have each contributed $1,000. Donations are being accepted at the Bank of Clark County. Mail checks to Chabad of Clark County, 9604 NE 126th Ave. No. 2320, Vancouver, WA. Make donations to account number 010025500.
PJA Auction Dec. 16 Under Big Top
Under the Big Top is the theme of the 46th Annual PJA Auction scheduled for Dec. 16 at the renovated Mittleman Jewish Community Center.
The silent auction begins at 4 p.m., with appetizers, games and open bar in the gymnasium which will be decorated like a big circus tent. The lobby will open at 6 p.m. to host the buffet dinner provided by Century Catering. Seating and the live auction will be in the ballroom.
Some of the auction items available are stays at condos in Paris, in the Florida Keys and in Mexico. Auction-goers also can bid on meals at restaurants all over the city. And once again PJA will auction off a full orthodontic treatment from Dr. Richard Garfinkle.
This event is being planned by the Auction’s Executive Committee: Jan Berne, Midge Cone, Kimberley Meisels and Ruth Steckel.
Tickets are $75. RSVP to Rosanne Levi at PJA, 503-245-0126 or rlevi@portlandjewishacademy.org.
