On Nov. 6, Susan Bernstein, director of education at Congregation Neveh Shalom, hosted a delegation of Muslim leaders from Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria and Tanzania through the U.S. Department of State professional development program known as the International Visitor Leadership Program.

IVLP participants are nominated by U.S. embassies overseas as current or emerging leaders in their fields.  The program fosters mutual understanding.

After a brief tour of the synagogue, the group sat down to discuss ways that the Muslim communities in each of their home cities could better understand and dialogue with the Jews who reside there.

A desire to learn more about Jewish customs, practices, and foundations for belief were topics that the group expressed an interest in and desire to continue learning about, according to Bernstein.

Bernstein said one of the goals of the program is to inspire continued conversation and learning.

The delegates included the mayor of Dire Dawa Provisional Administration; special duties officer, Islamic Council for Development and Humanitarian Assistance; program manager, Youth Peace and Empowerment Group Plateau State Coordinator, Interfaith Mediation Center; and executive secretary, Muslim Development Foundation.
