By Jewish Review
As Jewish life in Vancouver is taking off with the announcement of a substantial gift that will enable Congregation Kol Ami to build a synagogue there, the Fort Vancouver Regional Library and the Shalom Chapter of Hadassah partnered to bring three programs to the community to celebrate Jewish Book Month.
Two of the events already have taken place. All were scheduled for the Three Creeks Community Library.
The conluding event is set for Monday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m.
Eric Kimmel will read from his work and talk about how he chooses his themes.
Kimmel’s first book was published in 1974. Since then he has published more than 50 titles.
Many of his books have won awards and appear on school and library recommended lists.
He was awarded the Caldecott Honor Medal for “Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins” and the Sydney Taylor Picture Book Award for both “Gershon’s Monster” and “The Hanukkah Guest.” His latest book is “Wonders and Miracles: A Passover Companion.”
The first program took place Nov. 8 when Holocaust survivor and author Alter Weiner spoke about his autobiography, “From a Name to a Number,” published this year.
The second program took place as this editon of the Review was on the press Nov. 15. Writer and former Jewish Review staff editor Scott Nadelson spoke about the development of his two story collections, “Saving Stanley: The Brickman Stories,” winner of the Oregon Book Award for short fiction and the Great Lakes Colleges Association New Writers Award, and “The Cantor’s Daughter,” recipient of the Samuel Goldberg and Sons Fiction Prize for Emerging Jewish Writers and winner of the Oregon Book Award for short fiction. He teaches at Willamette University.
