In honor of Jewish Book Month families can visit the PJ “Pajama” Library display at the Mittleman Jewish Community Center throughout November to see sample books, reading lists and to sign up for the innovative Jewish reading program.
PJ Library will also be represented at several upcoming holiday book fairs and story times. A community-wide mailing will provide a free PJ Library book selection to Portland homes so families can learn more about the program and how they can participate.
PJ Library supports Jewish literacy for families with at least one Jewish parent and children from six months to six years.
Portland was one of the first cities this year invited to partner with the Harold Grinspoon Foundation of Western Massachusetts, the Foundation that introduced PJ Library. Today, The Grinspoon Foundation has partnerships in more than 50 cities, and will ship 12,500 books and CDs next month.
Elsewhere in Oregon, Eugene has partnered with the Grinspoon Foundaton to bring the PJ Library there, thanks to the generosity of Sharon Ungerleider of Eugene.
The age-appropriate texts and music are selected by top national Jewish educators. Topics include Jewish holidays, values, Torah stories, traditions and Israel.
PJL families also receive parenting books such as Wendy Mogel’s “Blessings of a Skinned Knee.”
