Living Legacy Workshops, a new project from Chabad of Oregon, offer hands-on group experiences such as matzah baking or pressing olive oil for various holidays.
In celebration of Hanukah, the Living Legacy workshop will allow children to make olive oil with an olive press. Youth groups, religious schools and other groups are invited to schedule a session for their students during early December.
An open community workshop will be held 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Dec. 2, at the Everything Jewish Store, 6684 SW Capitol Highway. Cost is $3.50 per person.
“In a world saturated with video games, television and the Internet, it is a challenge to convince children to concentrate on the printed page,” according to Rabbi Avrohom Perlstein, director of the Living Legacy program. “How then do we bring them to a deeper understanding of their Jewish culture, history and most of all the Torah?”
“The Living Legacy Workshops are part of the answer,” he said. “Through hands-on workshops on fundamental aspects of Jewish life and history, children learn the ancient crafts of matzah baking, pressing olive oil, Torah writing and more.”
To schedule a group workshop or for more information on the community workshop, call Chabad at 503-977-9947. Workshops are also available in other Oregon cities.
