Cantor Linda Shivers of Congregation Neveh Shalom will participate in Kol Isha—A Woman’s Voice, a gala concert in celebration of 20 years of women cantors to be held at the Jewish Theological Seminary’s cantorial school Dec. 16 in New York.

Female graduates of the Jewish Theological Seminary’s cantorial school will perform at 3 p.m. Dec. 16 in New York conjunction with the Seminary’s H. L. Miller Cantorial School and the Cantors Assembly.

Shivers actually graduated in 1984 from JTS with a bachelor’s degree in sacred music before the school began graduating female cantors. She received her “Diploma of Hazzan” in 1987, when the school officially graduated women as cantors.

During the concert sponsored by the Women’s League, Shivers plans to sing Vay’chulu, which is part of a service commissioned by Neveh Shalom in honor of the Conservative congregation’s 120th anniversary. The Zimrat Shalom service was composed by Robert Solomon in 1989.

This event at the JTS will include a performance by women cantors from across the country, a musical piece composed specifically for the event, a program journal, and a CD of performances by some of the participating cantors. Proceeds from the event will fund a Women’s League award to be presented to a female cantorial student, as well as future educational programming.

If you are interested in purchasing tickets for the event, contact the Women’s League office at 800-628-5083.
