Beth Israel hosts NW Portland Ministries Christmas dinner
By Jewish Review
Congregation Beth Israel will once again host the Northwest Portland Ministries free Christmas dinner from noon to 2 p.m. on Dec. 25.
“People from all walks of life gather in Goodman Hall to enjoy a turkey dinner and good cheer,” according to the social action page on Beth Israel’s Web site, www.BethIsrael-pdx.org. “Some are elderly, some are disabled, some are homeless, some are poor, some are lonely and some are simply far from their families.”
Volunteers still are needed and a sign-up sheet is posted at www.BethIsrael-pdx.org.
Beth Israel provides the turkeys, the venue, financial support and most of the on-site volunteers and Meals-on-Wheels drivers. Additionally, Beth Israel’s Knit-a Mitzvah group has joined with the Tigard Knitting Guild to make scarves and hats to give to people who come to the dinner.
Other faith communities involved in NW Portland Ministries provide financial support and items such as decorations and stuffing.
Beth Israel’s office is collecting donations of small practical items such as toothbrushes, pens, notepads, packets of cocao, combs, etc. to include in gift bags being assembled for attendees. Items can be dropped of at Beth Israel, 1972 NW Flanders.
