A vandals apparently was interrupted at the Eastside Jewish Cemetery in Troutdale in December.
Only the beginning of what may have been a gang “tag” was spray-painted in gold paint onto the monument stone that marks location of the Jewish cemetery within the Douglass Pioneer Cemetery.
The graffiti was discovered Dec. 16 by Paul Frank, the former Eastside Jewish Community president who now lives in Boise, Idaho, and was visiting Portland at the time.
EJCoP member Michael McKay has oversight responsibility for the Jewish cemetery. He said the attempted vandalism was limited only to the Jewish section of the larger cemetery.
“This day there was no other painting” at the cemetery.
Metro Cemeteries Operations Manager Mike Brown said the Douglass Pioneer Cemetery has been targeted by vandals in the past, including a recent fire set by a cemetery building but that did neglibible damage.
