Shivers, Abolofia to perform

Soprano Sheerya Shivers and clarinetist Reina Abolofia will perform Jewish and classical compositions in a free concert, Jan. 19 at 7:30 p.m. at Lincoln Hall, Room 75 at Portland State University.

Shivers, a recent graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University, will perform works by Mozart, Bach, Strauss and Goldfaden.

Abolofia is a master’s candidate in clarinet performance at Portland State University and will also play a variety of classical works.

Shivers is the daughter of Linda and Doug Shivers. Linda Shivers is the cantor at Congregation Neveh Shalom. Abolofia is the daughter of Mark and Francine Abolofia and the granddaughter of Stan and Shirley Hodes.

Shivers has sung in several operas and operettas including “Iolanthe,” “Ruddigore,” “The Magic Flute” and “Susannah and Semele.” She has performed in Vienna, the Amalfi Coast Music Festival in Italy, Prairie Fire Theatre in Bloomington, Ill., as well as in Portland. She studied voice with Corinne Walker, Carren Moham and Ruth Dobson. She graduated with a bachelor of music in vocal performance, magna cum laude from Illinois Wesleyan University in May 2007.

Abolofia performs regularly with the PSU Symphony and PSU Clarinet Ensemble. Every year she puts on at least one solo recital. She teaches clarinet. She maintains a private studio, teaching both at Portland State’s Lincoln Hall and at West Linn High School.

She serves as the graduate teaching assistant for the PSU clarinet studio and is a teaching assistant for PSU undergraduate music majors.
