John Efron, professor of Jewish History at UC Berkeley, will talk about the influence of medicine in the formation of modern Jewish identity in Germany. Between 1800 and 1900, the character of German Jewry rapidly changed from traditional and observant to a secular, scientific and skeptical community. This talk will trace that process and explain how medicine has come to occupy such an exalted place among Jews, now known as a quintessentially “Jewish” profession. Professor Efron received his PhD from Columbia University and is the author of "Medicine and the German Jews: A History," and "Defenders of the Race: Jewish Doctors and Race Science in Fin-de Siécle Europe." Event is part of the Writers and Scholars lecture series presented by the Institute for Judaic Studies and is cosponsored by the Maimonides Society of the JFGP.
